Mission Academy’s Signature Learning Experience

Mission Academy’s signature learning experience is thoughtfully crafted to do just that. Through passion projects, engaging workshops, career explorations, and real-world project-based learning, scholars are encouraged to find their unique gifts and let them shine! Our student-led and personalized signature learning experience focus on the individual so that every child is empowered with excellence.

Guides Vs. Traditional Teachers

Mission Academy’s team is a collective of highly qualified dynamic educators with diverse backgrounds, passions, and areas of expertise. Our educators take on the role of guides who facilitate meaningful learning experiences while letting students take the lead. Our educators coach scholars towards personal fulfillment and academic success through workshops, seminars, and project-based learning. They accommodate scholars at unique levels and paces while guiding them to become autonomous, responsible, and free-thinking individuals.

PBL & Deeper Learning

At Mission Academy, we believe students learn by doing. In order for scholars to one day impact society by solving real-world problems and discovering breakthroughs, we must provide authentic opportunities for developing those skills. That is why project-based learning is a core aspect of our signature learning experience. With project-based learning, scholars have the opportunity to spend extended time periods exploring real-world scenarios. Their core knowledge, critical thinking skills, collaboration, and creativity are put to the test as they dive deep into exploration. Whether it’s launching a startup business, creating a tide pool habitat, writing a play, painting a mosaic, or programming a robot, Mission Academy students are building real-life skills in the classroom every day.

Field Trips & Guest Presenters

After completing their exploration of the wild west project, scholars immersed themselves in the experience of strolling through Lake Valley Ghost Town’s historic site. While studying entomology in a thematic learning cycle, scholars held their magnifying glasses up to a cage full of brightly colored, exotic insects an NMSU professor brought over. Scholars learn best by fully experiencing the world around them, which is why our signature learning experience taps into the power of mentorship and community education. From discussions with elected officials, local business owners, and non-profit leaders to field trip expeditions to the NASA Challenger Center or rafting the Rio Grande river, we provide our scholars with authentic opportunities to see the world from a new perspective. Our community involvement inspires scholars to explore diverse career paths and discover their true passions.

Student-Led Learning

Mission Academy guides use student-led learning to mentor scholars towards independence by giving them opportunities to be responsible, accountable, and an advocate for themselves. Through programs like the student-run town council, scholars develop crucial 21st-century skills such as critical-thinking, leadership, communication, collaboration, organization, and time management. We empower students to be active leaders in their own education, discovering their strengths and striving to be the best that they can be.

Multi-Age Learning Communities

Our multi-age learning communities celebrate scholars’ strengths while harnessing the power of relationships and mentoring. Students of multiple ages are in the same learning community together as a reflection of our mastery-based learning method. There are many benefits to this style of learning such as taking ownership of your education, becoming a peer leader and mentor, and building a diverse community.

Character Education & Social Emotional Learning

We believe what’s on the inside matters the most, which is why our scholars learn to be kind, compassionate, courageous, and caring. Through character education and community service, our scholars nurture friendships with empathy and stand up for what is right. Our signature learning experience aims to increase scholars’ emotional intelligence, helping them identify and understand their feelings while advocating for their wants and needs. They develop important life skills such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, and taking ownership of their own lives. Our guides mentor scholars to become amazing individuals with strong moral compasses who will make a difference in the world.

Timbernook – Outdoor Play-Based Learning

As a Timbernook school, we offer weekly outdoor experiential play-based learning opportunities for scholars in grades K-7.  From building a beaver dam to creating a golf-ball run using loose parts, our scholars are engaged in creative outdoor learning that inspires their imagination and connects them with nature. Our two outdoor classrooms, beautiful and functional garden, and farm area with chickens to care for allow students to feel grounded in creativity while exploring the great outdoors.

Health & Wellness

Missions Academy’s health and wellness program combines physical education with adventure-based exploration. In weekly PE classes, scholars learn about athleticism, sportsmanship, perseverance, and healthy habits. They also partake in adventurous excursions to hiking trails, river walks, and local parks. We aim to increase the overall well-being of scholars including their physical and mental health.

Measuring Progress

At Mission Academy, we focus on measuring what matters. Our mastery-based grading system allows scholars to master individual concepts at the highest level. Students are not bound to the constraints of a certain grade level or pacing- they must master content and demonstrate understanding to advance to higher skills. This allows scholars to progress at a faster pace, ensuring they are always challenged but never falling behind. Our progress measuring leads to individualized and targeted instruction, reducing learning gaps and challenging students to unlock their potential. Our goal is to focus on authentic and relevant learning experiences while mentoring students to achieve success and become the best version of themselves.

Community Building

At Mission Academy, we are a family; a melting pot of diverse backgrounds and stories fusing together to form a strong community bond. We always rally together and support one another whether it’s to celebrate successes or to offer help in times of need. With a community of kind, caring, and passionate individuals, Mission Academy is a safe place to form relationships and will feel like home before you know it.

The Right Environment For Every Stage Of Learning

Learning is a journey, and each of our Learning Communities provides an environment where our learners can uncover their unique strengths, develop real-world skills, and grow their individual character.
