Mission Academy’s High School Studio reimagines traditional education by pairing innovative educational techniques with real-world experiences and opportunities. Our flexible, mastery-based, and interest driven learning experience supports scholars as they move at an advanced pace and specialize in areas of passion. Scholars also have the opportunity to customize their learning and become active community members through apprenticeships and service projects. With a student-led approach, scholars become independent thinkers and learn important 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. Mission’s method leaves graduates feeling fulfilled, ahead of the curve, and empowered to chase their dreams.
Throughout their high-school journey, scholars will take a combination of required courses in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science & Technology, and Social Studies. Scholars study the mathematical concepts of algebra, geometry, & trigonometry with optional elective courses teaching real world skills such as personal finance and business accounting. In English Language Arts, scholars combine classic concepts such as literary analysis and exploration of classic literature with 21st century career skills such as public speaking, blogging, and crafting research articles.
In science, all students study biology and chemistry with the option to pursue elective credits in independent areas of interest. And in Social Studies, scholars study history, geography, government, and economics. Our approach to core subjects is providing scholars with content knowledge and teaching them to use it in creative, purposeful, real-world applications.
At Mission Academy, we recognize that each scholar has a unique set of strengths, talents, and interests. We validate and reflect this concept by offering flexible choice and customization to our scholars. Through elective credits, passion projects, apprenticeships, and community service, scholars are able to select areas of education that matter the most to them and explore those subjects in hands-on, innovative, and meaningful ways.
Whether it’s a work-study at the local makerspace, a visual or performing arts exploration, culinary classes, entrepreneurial quests, foreign language studies, or an academic specialty, our scholars customize a high school experience that fuels their passions and leads to future success.
Mission Academy’s apprenticeship program helps students gain career experience while developing foundational business skills. Mentors explore students’ interest to locate and set up apprenticeships that match students’ passions. We guide students through the employment process helping them to develop a personal pitch, build & format resumes, practice interviewing skills, and develop professional habits. Examples of apprenticeships our scholars have held are developing computer software, working at a local makerspace, gaining retail experience with local brands like Organ Mountain Outfitters, and even performing as a magician! Apprenticeships help students acquire valuable, real-world knowledge and help them gain unique professional experiences at a young age.
Through dual enrollment & AP courses, our scholars have the ability to earn college credits while still in high school. This provides our students with opportunities to challenge themselves and graduate ahead of the curb. Students can begin taking dual enrollment courses at Dona Ana Community College in 11th grade. Additionally, Mission Academy offers AP science courses to students through the University of Texas at Austin.
Mission academy uses a mastery-based grading method that allows students to understand content at the deepest level while progressing at an individualized and advanced pace. Our guides use strategies such as workshops, rubricsand portfolios to document and justify mastery of content knowledge.
This method takes pressure off test performance and encourages intrinsic motivation, self-reflection, and constant growth. When scholars reach senior year, our advisors convert mastery-based transcripts into traditional letter grade transcripts to streamline the college application process and set students up for success.
